Multiple IP Registrations
02/16/10 10:24 AM
Extension 2440 has been registering quite a bit over the last two weeks. This past occurrence, it has registered 7 times within a few hours. Why is this happening?
The client isn't complaining. Does it require repair. Maybe I should move it to see if it's the phone or the switch port.

What I understand is that when an IP phone registers repeatedly without moving from its switch port, then some sort of power issue is at fault.
Maybe the switch port--POE or the power supply--brick or patch cables or phone itself
I'm following this process of elimination.
Any shortcuts? Any errors or logs to help pinpoint the fault.
It's not just one phone. Probably 12 of 230.

We have a phone that started this about 2 months ago. Since then we have seen 3 more phones on 3 different 3300s doing this as well. These do not seem to be power related. There are no corresponding power related logs in the Cisco POE on our side. If you search the software logs you may find warning logs related to IP port timeout failures associated with that device number. Just after that entry you may see the device registration log. We are working with Mitel support, our VAR, and our network guys to resolve this. I will post a follow up when we get this figured out.

Don't know if it applies, but I remember having a conversation a few years back at the User Group Annual Meeting with a couple of other members.
Basically, they were stating that some POE switches were not rated to push POE to all ports (at once) in the switch. For example, if you had a 48-port switch, it might only be able to handle 35 (I don't remember the exact numbers they referenced) POE devices, max.
Might be something to look into in your environment.

I was mistaken. We do not have POE switches. We have power supply "bricks" for each IP phone.

5212 and 5312 IP phones continue to reboot throughout the day. A clear pattern is not apparent. Replacing phones and power supplies seem to clear occurrences but it's not definitive yet.

Otis,
Have you checked your DHCP settings to see how often their lease is renewing? We have a call center here, so ours is set to permenant.

leases are renewing weekly...
does this mean that the phones are rebooting weekly?
I have found some correlation between lease renewal dates/times and the maintenance log entries device detections.
We also have a Contact Center server. This weekly was set prior to my arrival and I haven't had any reason, up until now, to consider changing it.
Should I run it by our vendor (installer) first? Any downside to making this change?
Reserved and causiously excited!!!! otis

Yes, that would mean they are rebooting weekly.
It's an easy change with no concerns. Contact your VAR if you feel more comfortable.

Ok, now we are getting somewhere. My VAR said that we could run out of available IPs if we don't expire the lease periodically.
But, we reboot the 3300 ICP every Tuesday at 2:00a.m. So, it seems that the DHCP lease time could be set at permanent because the IPs are being reset each week anyway.
How's my reasoning?

The 3300 reboot won't affect the timing of the DHCP lease expiry.
How many IP addresses are in your scope vs. how many actual devices are registered? Are the phones the only things in that subnet, or do you have PCs using it, as well?
Assuming you are not running too close on devices vs. available IPs, and you aren't adding new devices/removing devices constantly, you can extend the lease window to something like 3-6 months or even a year if your environment is pretty stable.

Jason,
Scope: 487 IPs 10.11.8.21 - 10.11.9.254 220 active phones, quantity very stable MACs entail name changes
Only phones in subnet, PCs in separate subnet.
Is the IP lease expiry intrusive to the operation of the phone. Will the client notice anything if this occurs during the day? If so, is there a way to change the time of day that this process is performed? ************************************ from my VAR: Absolutely Question: The other concern is that the phone resets are occurring during the day and the lease time doesn’t give me the option set the time to after hours.
Since the controller is rebooted weekly at 2:00a.m on Tuesday, couldn’t we set the lease time to permanent? The phones are being reset each week and at a better time. Does this sound reasonable?
{is this a contradiction to your response? or am I misinterpreting the response?
P.S.
Would I be able to receive an endorsement from the User Forum so that I may have access to Mitel's eDocs? I've been at a disadvantage in not having direct access to this information. What must I do to gain access?
Thank you.

A lease renewal is transparent to the user of any device using the DHCP protocol. A device will attempt to renew at the 50% point of the lease expiration. A request is sent from the device, in this case a VoIP phone, to the DHCP server in the form of a directed "broadcast" and requests renewal. If the DHCP server is reached then the DHCP server renews the lease at that time. At no point during that transaction was the phone ever down, it was transparent and proactive. If the DHCP server is unreachable the device will continue to attempt to renew at various intervals that are specificed in the protocol.
Here is a link for all the details regarding DHCP, scroll to bottom of article for details on leases and device behavior at various points. http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-1030584.html

Further to this thread and all IMHO....
1) Lease renewal is NOT intrusive to phone 2) If you are running software level 9 and above on the 3300 then rebooting weekly is a waste, monthly is sufficient. 3) You cannot specify the time a lease renews because it is completely unnecessary and normally completely transparent unless the DHCP server is unreachable. What is doing your lease renewals? Is the 3300 the DHCP server for this subnet? 4) I certainly hope that since your IP address subnet that you reference above is > 24 bits (aka 255.255.255.0) that the subnet mask on the 3300 is set properly. based on the little information I have, your mask appears to be 23 bit, therefore the 3300 should be set to 255.255.254.0. You can check this in a variety of ways but asking your VAR is probably easiest. 5) your VAR is correct in that a permanent lease time is not a good idea. If you add, remove devices or reboot them some addresses will just stay "leased" forever thus eventually consuming the available pool. An extended time, like a month or 2 would be fine, but regardless, lease renewal should NOT affect operation unless there is an underlying issue. 6) If you are seeing a phone continually attempt a lease renewal then is perhaps the DHCP server unreachable during some periods due to network traffic? Backups running at night? 7) perhaps you should review your infrastructure and network setup with us or your VAR. Are phones and PCs running thru the same cable? Are you using VLANs? what VLAN is the phone? Are your phones and PCs (if seperate cable) on separate L2 switches?

Thank you.
This tells me that the lease expirations have nothing to do with the multiple and frequent re-registations during the day that are intrusive to the client's IP phone.
In the Maintenance log, they appear as a Device Detection. The IPs remain the same but they definitely lose contact with the 3300 ICP. Calls are being dropped.

Bit Mask is 255.255.254.0 Phones and PCs share cable but are on separate vLans
3300 ICP release level 6.1
I'm not seeing continuous renewal attempts, I'm seeing phones rebooting several times during the same day, over several days and then stop.
A phone may reboot several times in several hours and then nothing.

The first thing Mitel would tell you to resolve this is upgrade. Unless you have some sort of power issue which I doubt since you've said that you are not on PoE but are running on bricks, then I would have to concur with Mitel - upgrade....

I agree with Dawn. Updating the 3300 to version 9 or 10 (MCD 4) may resolve the issues.

Could this Software Warning in the Log be related to resets?
Is there a reference guide for the log messages?

Short of calling Mitel Tech Support, I'm not sure where else you might be able to find information regarding this particular log.
